A tropical cyclone is a rapidly rotating storm system with a low-pressure center, closed low-level atmospheric circulation, strong winds, and a spiral arrangement of thunderstorms producing heavy rain or squalls.
In India, here is a list of cyclones.
1. Tauktae Cyclone
It is the first cyclonic storm to emerge from the Arabian Sea in the year 2022. It made landfall in southern Gujarat on May 17, 2022, and was designated as a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm (VSCS). Porbandar, Amreli, Junagarh, Gir Somnath, and coastal Ahmedabad districts have been issued warnings, while Junagarh, Gir Somnath, and Amreli have been placed on alert.
The Mumbai airport was closed until 2 p.m. on May 17, 2022, after the city was hit by rain and strong winds. The Bandra-Worli sea link in Mumbai has been closed. In addition, five makeshift shelters have been set up in Mumbai’s 24 wards, and three NDRF teams have been dispatched.
2. Yaas Cyclone
Cyclone Yaas formed in the Bay of Bengal and hit the coasts of West Bengal and adjoining Odisha in May 2022. Oman has given the cyclone its name. Deep depression developed into Cyclonic Storm ‘Yaas’ over the east-central Bay of Bengal, passing within 600 kilometers of Port Blair.
3. Nisarga Cyclone
The second pre-monsoon cyclone to emerge from the Arabian Sea was Cyclone Nisarga. It made landfall in Mumbai’s Alibag neighborhood and weakened within six hours. Since Phyan in 2009, this was the first cyclone to hit Mumbai. In Maharashtra, the cyclone killed six people and injured 16 others.
4. Cyclone Amphan (Cyclone Amphan)
Cyclone Amphan was a powerful tropical cyclone that wreaked havoc on the Indian states of Odisha and West Bengal, killing hundreds of people and destroying property. Cyclone Amphan was the first pre-monsoon super cyclone to emerge from the Bay of Bengal this century.
5. Kyarr Cyclone
Since cyclone Gonu in 2007, Cyclone Kyarr was the second-strongest tropical cyclone. Cyclone Kyarr formed in the Arabian Sea and moved from the Indian coast to the Gulf of Aden. It landed in Western India, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, Socotra, and Somalia.
6. Maha Cyclone
Cyclone Maha was a powerful cyclonic storm that moved parallel to the Indian coast and intensified rapidly. As it approached Gujarat, the cyclone began to weaken. Cyclone Maha made landfall as a depression near Gujarat, but it quickly weakened.
7. Vayu cyclone
Cyclone Vayu, which formed in the Arabian Sea and caused moderate damage to lives and property in Gujarat, was a very severe cyclonic storm. Cyclone Vayu was the most powerful storm to hit the state since the Gujarat Cyclone of 1998. Cyclone Vayu hit the Maldives, Pakistan, and Oman in addition to India.
8. Hikka Cyclone
Cyclone Hikka formed in the Arabian Sea, intensified, and made landfall in Oman. The Arabian Sea saw four cyclones in 2019: Kyarr, Maha, Vayu, and Hikka.
9. Fani Cyclone
Since the Odisha Cyclone of 1998, Cyclone Fani was the most powerful tropical storm to hit the state. Cyclone Fani made landfall in Odisha, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, and East India after forming in the Indian Ocean and wreaking havoc on people and property. Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Sri Lanka were among the countries affected outside of India.
10. BOB 03
The Indian Meteorological Department designated a depression in the Bay of Bengal as BOB 03. The BOB 03 hit the north Odisha-West Bengal coastline the day after it was identified, causing massive destruction of lives and property.
11. Bulbul Cyclone
Cyclone Bulbul was a powerful cyclone that hit India’s West Bengal state. It resulted in massive rainfall, floods, and other natural disasters, all of which resulted in the loss of life and property. Bangladesh was hit outside of India.
